Post-Season: The biggest problem with KSU football in 2002 was that no one knew who the quarterback was. Coach Snyder never decided, even for the culminating bowl game. The players didn't know, the fans didn't know, and without strong leadership at QB-- you just can't be successful. Lots of other factors played in to the disappointing year in 2001, but a big part of it is attributible to the coaching staff. Let's hope for better in 2002. I'll sure miss Bill Bennett. :-( After the A&M Loss: (which I was there in person to witness) Again, like the OU game, KSU didn't seem to be playing to win until the 4th quarter. It came down to a play in the last 30 seconds of the game, but unlike KU against TTU several weeks ago, the Cats couldn't convert to tie the game and get a chance to win in overtime. This loss was somewhat about a lack of leadership, but mainly about turnovers: KSU gave up 4, 3 of which led directly to A&M touchdowns. 21 unanswered points in the second half, thanks to KSU blunders that started with Aaron Locket's fumble and turnover of an A&M punt. That was really the turning point in the game. Statistically, the Cats were dominant, holding A&M to less than 200 years passing and about 50 years of total rushing. 2 other turnovers by El Roberson were costly. Mark Dunn did a super job as QB for the Cats coming in for the 4th quarter, and almost rallied the purple pride in time. He played with poise and maturity, and threw the ball very well. Bowl eligibility for the Cats now seems out of the question.... certainly highly unlikely. Time for Coach Snyder to pick our QB for the rest of the year and next season (I would pick Dunn at this point, because of his maturity and ability to both pass and run) and start building for next year's hopes. There is still Nebraska.... and a win there could be huge even if our record for the season is dismal After the TTU Loss: (which I was there in person to witness) What a sad embarrassment-- the TTU squad really did some good adjusting after their losses to UT and KU, and stopped the run by KSU very effectively. Special teams by KSU were a horror-- how can we be a Division I team and have this much trouble with our kicking game? Losing to TTU probably means we won't be bowl eligible, since we could not drop another game all year, and we still have to face the Huskers in Lincoln this year, among others. :( It was the first start for Mark Dunn, as El Roberson did not play at all.... but not a very impressive beginning. KSU was not in the game defensively, and gave up WAY too many big plays. After CU Loss: What a shocker.... attributable most likely to a failure of leadership (or just lack of leadership) at the QB position... injuries also have hurt, but the team just seemed psychologically out of the game after the respectable performance against OU. After OU Loss: Game play was pretty good, but the Cats emerged fairly banged up, esp. on the offensive and defensive lines. KSU needed to start playing with more intensity earlier in the game, the clock ran out by the time we decided to really start playing to win. After 1st 2 games: After a successful opener against USC and an impressive blowout of the New Mexico Aggies, K-State will face potentially its toughest game on September 29th in Norman against the Sooners. My prediction: KSU 34, OU 17.
